UPLB has proven once again its commitment to advancing research, not only in the arts and sciences, but in ecological education and culture as well.

Participants from UPLB joined the 2021 ASEAN University Network on Ecological Education and Culture’s (AUN-EEC) annual conference on Sept. 15 via Zoom. The theme of the conference is “Creating an Ecosystem for Ecological Education and Culture,” with panel discussions on “Enabling a Sustainable Culture” and “University Partnerships toward SDGs.” The conference was hosted by the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU).

Four UPLB participants presented their paper under the “Best Practices in Ecological Education and Culture” category, while one presented under “Sustainable Cities and Communities”.

Dr. Faith S. Maranan, in behalf of Drs. Charina Gracia B. Banaay, and Daniel Edison M. Husana, of the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS) discussed their paper entitled “Leveraging project-based learning for ecological education: Evaluation of a Corbicula flumineaproject as a medium for teaching ecological concepts”.

Dr. Nina M. Cadiz of IBS gave a talk on the “Benefits and Health Risks of Rurbanization of our Towns and Cities: The Case of Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture.

Mr. Jayson F. Enciso, UPLB MS Botany graduate, with co-authors Drs. Nina M. Cadiz and Nelly S. Aggangan from IBS and UPLB National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, contributed a paper on the “Role of Biofertilizer in Meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) through Education”.

Dr. Eric Joyce Grande from the Department of Humanities delivered a presentation on “Advancing Ecological Education and Culture through Research-Practice Partnership as Indigenous Knowledge Management in Philippine Basic Education”.

Dr. Melodee Marciana E. de Castro, in behalf of Mr. Joshua Gabrielle F. Capili, Dr. Dinah Pura T. Depositario, DBA3, and Fr. Gerard T. Borja, of Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship, UPLB and Vincentian Foundation, Inc., shared the results of their study on “Social Innovation through Sustainable Housing: the Case of Vincentian Bamboo Village”.

AUN-EEC is a thematic network that serves as a platform for cooperation among universities in the region to create and share knowledge and resources on educational practices that promote and cultivate a sustainable lifestyle and culture. (KAE Blanco)
